Our Mission The mission of Unity is to empower students to lead fulfilling academic, professional, and personal lives. A Grades 6-12 College Preparatory Curriculum Unity Prep offers a college-preparatory liberal arts and sciences program of study in mathematics, English language arts (ELA), science, and social studies that prepares students to succeed in postsecondary education by fostering the desire and capacity to learn independently, think critically, and communicate effectively. Expert Teaching and Advancement Unity Prep recruits exceptional teachers and provides them with a long-term career path. The Unity Prep career ladder encourages star teachers to remain in the classroom for the long term. More Time for Learning For deeper engagement, accelerated academic growth, and preparation for college, Unity Prep offers extended days, weeks, and years that provide approximately 30% more time on academic and co-curricular activities than the local district average. Intensive and Differentiated Academic Support Using multiple forms of assessment, our teachers provide customized remediation and acceleration support. Through our Skills-Building course and our Teaching Assistants, we offer individualized support. Through Homework Help after school and Saturday Academies, we provide additional support. Enrichment Courses and Elective Clubs With its Enrichment programs in World Languages & Culture and Design & Technology, Unity Prep promotes applied and interdisciplinary learning, as well as developing essential 21st century professional skills including technology, communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving. In collaboration with local educational and cultural institutions, Unity Prep offers elective clubs in areas such as sports and the visual and performing arts to develop team-oriented skills. Customized Academic Support Co-taught classes; two teachers in the majority of our classrooms Tutoring availability Small group interventions: Leveled Literacy and Math Intervention courses Other Special Education Services Mandated counseling - on staff Speech/OT/other related services NYS Assessments Unity's overall proficiency rates in 2019, the last pre-pandemic assessment period, were our highest ever. Since 2013, both math and ELA results have improved virtually every year. Our performance in 2022 vs. 2019 mirror the city results - slight gains in ELA and a drop in math The results of our state tests are competitive with those of District 13, which includes Brooklyn Heights, Fort Greene, Clinton Hill, and Bedford Stuyvesant. We consistently outperform District 16, which is our most heavily represented district (students' home district). Among economically disadvantaged students, we outperformed District 13 and 16. Unity Private School Bus Unity offers a FREE private bus for our students. Athletics at Unity Unity Preparatory Charter School of Brooklyn combines athletics with academics. A total of 22 teams compete in 14 different sports at intermediate, junior, and varsity levels. A total of forty percent of the student body participates in athletics each year. Competitive athletics begins in grade 6, with a goal of having all students participate in a sport (Flag Football, Soccer, Volleyball, Cross Country, Step, Basketball, Dance and Step, Track, etc.) Enrichment Clubs Students can join a variety of other elective clubs, such as robotics, student government, art & design, and young journalists, in addition to performing arts clubs. Students choose elective clubs based on their interests. After-School Unity Preparatory partners with St. Nicks Alliance to bring quality after-school support to our students. St. Nicks Alliance serves more than 3,000 young people from elementary through high school each year with a seamless continuum of comprehensive services that target the developmental needs of youth as they grow.
