Bed-Stuy 'Stop the Violence' Basketball Tournament
A basketball tournament created and run by Harold 'Tre' Robinson as a way to provide the kids of Van Buren Street in Bed-Stuy (Brooklyn) with healthy entertainment during the summer months. "I can't stress defense enough, because these kids don't understand that defense wins championships over and over again." Harold 'Tre' Robinson
As part of the "Up Late" event on NYC High Line, countless visitors were invited to roam the park after-hours and be transported as dancers, musicians, and visual artists illuminated the park with installations, participatory performances, and endless hidden surprises. With Ox Prowl, mysterious dancers in giant glowing lanterns guided people through the park; participants enjoyed moments of intimate encounters and spontaneous performances. Carte Blanche Performance is a contemporary dance company that creates sensual, joyful works in nontraditional spaces, inviting the audience to permeate the performer's space.
Meer Musa - Nature Within
Filmed at his Bushwick studio in 2017, artist Meer Musa shares some insight behind his creative process and what inspires him to make art. Meer is fascinated by people and nature. He loves to reproduce them in his paintings and drawings. He uses videos and animations as further mediums for him to explore, as they gives him freedom to express his creative nature. In the Human Spirit paintings, Meer created a combination of people and nature to express his understanding of the interconnections between the two—the philosophy that all things coexist and we are all one. He believes all conscious beings are interconnected directly or indirectly.
The Help Network Volunteer Program
The Help Network recruits volunteers who commit to spend a minimum of one hour per week assisting a disabled, elderly, or sick person. Caregivers are selected from a large pool of applicants. The interview process takes into account ability, experience, and passion. The Help Network utilizes internet and social networking technologies to recruit local area managers, volunteers, and clients in local communities. Local managers create databases of volunteers and potential clients, conduct necessary interviews and background checks, and make appropriate arrangements between volunteers and clients. The goal is to hire caregivers for long-term careers, to ensure that they have healthy and happy relationships with the seniors who need their help. The best caregivers form long-standing bonds with the older adults they're caring for, eventually becoming like family. Volunteers are more than help around the house; they are open ears, caring arms, and good friends. "They have made a great difference in my life; there are so many things that I have set aside and did not get to, because the information was visual and I needed someone with sight to sit down and help me." Paula, Help Network client "I came to this country six years ago on my own, having $200 in my pocket. If it wasn't for the help of others, I would have never be able to get to this point. So I made a decision that I have to choose at least one person who I can help on a regular basis."
